Can Cannabis Really Help You Sleep?

Can Cannabis Really Help You Sleep?

Having trouble sleeping? New cannabis products featuring previously underutilized and promising cannabinoids such as CBN (cannabinol) and CBG (cannabigerol) might be just what you need. And there will soon be more of them on Delta 9 store shelves.

You probably already know someone who uses cannabis products containing CBD (cannabidiol) as a sleep aid. While everyone’s endocannabinoid system is unique and reacts in its own way to different cannabinoids, CBD is well known for its ability to help with numerous conditions related to pain management and anxiety, which naturally leads to better sleep.

Hundreds of CBD products have been developed and the same is now happening with lesser-known cannabinoids such as CBN and CBG. Research into the benefits of CBN and CBG is still in its early stages, but is already being driven by both anecdotal evidence and consumer demand.

CBN and CBG are found in much smaller amounts in cannabis plants when compared to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD. THC, the principal psychoactive constituent of cannabis, degrades into CBN over time. As a result, CBN is found in smaller amounts in cannabis plants and it has little if any psychoactive effect.

CBG is formed when enzymes in the cannabis plant break down CBGA (cannabigerolic acid). In the majority of cannabis strains, most of the CBGA is converted to THCA->THC and CBDA->CBD, leaving only a small amount to be converted into CBG.

Modern technology now allows researchers to isolate all components of the cannabis plant for study individually and in various combinations, any of which could be beneficial to you depending on your unique body chemistry. Additionally, new strains have been developed to contain higher levels of CBN and CBG.

Research has shown CBG to be potentially effective in addressing causative factors related to glaucoma, inflammatory bowel disease and Huntington’s disease, and it has shown promise with regards to inhibiting the growth of cancer cells. There is also evidence that CBG is an effective antibacterial agent, an appetite stimulant and a potential tool for use in fighting bladder disorders. Additionally, CBG has potential as an antidepressant and is believed to reduce anxiety.

Research also indicates that CBN may be a powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory agent, a neuroprotectant, and an appetite stimulant, in addition to anecdotal evidence that suggests CBN has sedative properties and the potential to reduce anxiety.

CBD, CBG and CBN have shown promise individually in the areas of pain relief, anxiety and sleep, but appear to be even more powerful when combined with THC and the natural terpenes present in the cannabis plant. Anecdotal evidence also suggests that when combined with minute doses of the known sleep aid melatonin, the cannabinoids and terpenes counteract the hangover effect some people feel the morning after taking melatonin.

Numerous new products utilizing combinations of THC, CBD, CBG and CBN as a sleep aid have already been developed and more are appearing on a weekly basis, including the products below.
